After our first call, I knew Vivian’s family would be such a joy to photograph. As a Washington, DC family photographer and maternity photographer, I’ve learned that something really special about every session often comes from the little personalities—and their daughter absolutely had one. Full of expression and curiosity, she was already the heart of their home. Vivian mentioned she might wear her current favorite outfit—a princess dress she’d been living in for weeks—but what greeted me at the door was even better: a colorful, original dress, tiny braids, and the best smile.
At first, she was shy. Even my usual trick of showing kids my camera didn’t quite win her over. She made me earn her trust—and honestly, those are often the most rewarding sessions. When she finally warmed up, she gave us everything. She jumped on the bed as many times as her parents allowed, played pretend making sushi, and then slowed things down by picking out her favorite books for her mom to read. It was the perfect rhythm of energy and calm, imagination and comfort.
After these moments at home, we headed to a nearby park in their Washington, DC neighborhood to wrap up the session. Walking through the colorful streets added something extra—this is where they live, where they spend their everyday life. Including those familiar places brings another layer to the photos, capturing not just the family but also the personality of their surroundings.
With a baby brother on the way, she is right at that beautiful in-between stage—still the center of attention, yet slowly stepping into her new role as a big sister. Capturing this season for their family made this maternity session in Washington, DC, especially meaningful. These are the fleeting moments that deserve to be remembered—the anticipation, the connection, and the everyday magic before everything changes in the best way.
Sessions like this always remind me why patience is so important in family photography. My goal isn’t just to deliver beautiful images as your Washington, DC family photographer—it’s to create an experience that feels relaxed, genuine, and even joyful. I want you to walk away remembering how it felt: the laughter, the quiet snuggles, the chaos, and the calm.
As a maternity and family photographer—and a parent myself—I understand that things don’t always go as planned. Kids can be shy, energetic, unpredictable, or all of the above. And that’s okay. I make space for all of it. Whether your child takes time to warm up or jumps right in, I’m there for every moment in between. Because those are real, unscripted details? They’re the ones that truly tell your story.
If you’re looking to document your own family in a way that feels natural and true to you, I’d love to work together.
I’m Rita Ambrosi, a family photographer serving Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia.
