How to Choose a Family Photographer in Washington, DC

As a Washington, DC, lifestyle and family photographer, I understand how important it is to find the right person to photograph your family.

There are so many things to consider when making this decision, especially when you're ready to go beyond a traditional family photography session. Maybe you're looking for something more than beautiful photos. You want to be present, connect with your family, and feel comfortable enough to show up just as you are, even in your most vulnerable moments, in front of someone you may be meeting for the first time.

Inviting a photographer into your home and into your family's everyday life is a personal experience. It's about trust, connection, and finding someone who understands what you want to remember about this season of your life.

If you're looking for a family photographer in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, or Maryland, here are a few things I would consider before making your decision.

1. Find Out How Their Photography Process Works

What happens after you send an inquiry? Is there an initial call? Do they take the time to explain how the experience works?

I think this first step is so important. Choosing a photographer shouldn't feel like you're simply booking a service. It should be an opportunity to ask questions, talk through any concerns, and understand what the experience will look like from beginning to end.

For me, the initial call is where our connection begins. We talk about your family, your everyday life, and what you want to remember about this particular season. I also share a little about myself, my background, and my family so you can get to know the person behind the camera.

My goal is for you to feel comfortable before we even meet in person. I want you to know who will be showing up at your door and feel like we've already gotten to know each other a little.

2. Find a Photographer You Connect With

This might be one of the most important things to consider. When you're choosing a lifestyle family photographer, you're not just looking at a portfolio. You're choosing someone who will spend time with you and your family, sometimes in the most intimate and ordinary parts of your life.

You might be welcoming a new baby, spending a slow morning at home, or simply wanting to document the way your family is right now. These moments can feel personal, and having someone around who makes you feel at ease matters.

Look for someone whose work you love, but also someone whose approach and values feel right for you.

Do you connect with the way they talk about family? Do you appreciate their perspective on motherhood, childhood, and documenting everyday life? Can you imagine having a conversation with them over a cup of coffee?

You don't have to be best friends with your photographer, of course! But feeling a connection can make such a difference in how you experience your session.

3. Choose Someone Who Understands That Your Family Isn't Seasonal

Family photography is often associated with fall leaves, holiday cards, or a particular time of year. And while those sessions can be beautiful, your family's story doesn't follow a calendar.

Maybe your baby just started walking. Maybe your oldest is becoming more independent. Maybe you're in a season of life that feels ordinary right now, but you know you'll want to remember it years from today.

These moments deserve to be documented, too.

When choosing a family photographer in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, or Maryland, look for someone who is willing to work with you to find a date that makes sense for your family.

I love approaching sessions this way. Rather than limiting the experience to a particular season or holiday, I want to create space for the moments that matter to you, whenever they happen.

Your family doesn't have to wait for the perfect season to have its story told.

4. Find Someone Who Makes You Feel Comfortable Asking Questions

The experience doesn't end once you've booked your session. In many ways, that's when the planning begins.

You might wonder what to wear, how to prepare your children, or what will happen if your toddler isn't in the mood for photos. You might have questions that come up a few days before your session or even that very morning.

I love staying connected with my clients throughout the process. I want you to feel comfortable reaching out, asking questions, and sharing any concerns you might have.

And if you're worried about your children behaving a certain way or your home looking a certain way, let's talk about it.

You don't need to have everything figured out before your photographer arrives. That's part of the experience, and having someone you feel comfortable communicating with can make it all feel much easier.

5. Remember That You Don't Have to Know Exactly How You'll Feel

Here's the thing: you won't know exactly how you'll feel in front of the camera until you're actually there.

Even if you've had your initial call, asked all your questions, and spent time looking through your photographer's work, being photographed can still feel unfamiliar.

And that's completely okay.

You don't need to know how to pose, what to do with your hands, or how to make every moment look beautiful. Especially when it comes to lifestyle family photography, the goal isn't to make everything look perfect.

It's to give you space to be together.

My approach is relaxed and patient. I'll always give your children the time they need, whether they're shy, energetic, curious, or simply having one of those days. Babies can take their time, too. There's no need to rush through the experience or expect everyone to be ready at the same moment.

Sometimes the best photographs happen in the pauses, the little interactions, and the moments when you stop thinking about the camera altogether.

Those are the moments I want you to remember.

6. Get to Know the Person Behind the Camera

This might sound like a small thing, but I think it's one of the details that makes a session feel different.

When I arrive at a family's home, I don't expect us to immediately jump into taking photographs. I love having a little time to settle in, talk, and get comfortable with each other.

And yes, I'll always accept a cup of coffee! I genuinely love coffee, and I think there's something lovely about sharing those everyday moments.

I also love when families ask me about my background, my life, and the places I've lived. I've always been drawn to different cultures, stories, and the things that make each family unique. When we discover shared interests or find something we have in common, it becomes another way to connect.

These little conversations matter to me because they remind us that there's a real person behind the camera and real people in front of it.

I don't want you to feel like you're welcoming a stranger into your home. I want us to have the chance to get to know each other, even if it's just a little.

And I think that connection naturally becomes part of the experience.

Finding the Right Family Photographer for You

Choosing a family photographer in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, or Maryland is about more than finding someone whose photographs you love.

It's about finding someone whose approach makes sense for your family, whose work speaks to you, and with whom you feel comfortable sharing a little piece of your life.

The right photographer will help you feel supported throughout the process, give your children room to be themselves, and understand that the most meaningful photographs don't always come from perfectly planned moments.

For me, family photography has always been about the connection between people. The little things you might not think to photograph yourself. The way your children come to you for comfort. The familiar rhythm of your mornings at home. The way your family fits together in this particular season of life.

These are the things that make your story yours.
