A Motherhood Story at Home with Kim Brannigan | Washington DC Family Photography
Some people inspire you through what they create, and others through the way they live, the way they see the world, and the details they bring into everyday life. Kim Brannigan, the creative behind @styledbykim, is one of those people.
I first connected with Kim through Instagram and immediately loved her appreciation for style, aesthetics, and the beauty of thoughtful details. As someone who loves documenting families in a natural, honest way, I was especially excited to photograph both her maternity and newborn sessions.
What made these sessions so meaningful was the chance to step into her home, get to know her on a more personal level, and document this new chapter of her life exactly as it unfolded.
Maternity Photography: Celebrating the Beauty of Motherhood
There is something unique and special about photographing a woman during pregnancy. It is a season filled with anticipation, change, and a quiet kind of magic that can be difficult to put into words.
For Kim's maternity session, I wanted to create images that felt like her: natural, effortless, and full of personality. All of this while exploring all of her amazing sense of style. Rather than focusing on perfectly posed portraits, we made space for genuine moments, the little details, and the connection to the baby she was about to meet.
Photographing her in the comfort of her own home made the experience even more personal. Home has a way of telling a story without needing to say anything at all. The light coming through the windows, the familiar surroundings, and the small details that make a space yours all become part of the memories.
As a Washington DC motherhood photographer, these are the moments I love most: the ones that reflect not just what a family looks like, but who they are during a particular season of life.
Newborn Photography at Home: The Beginning of a New Chapter
Returning to photograph Kim's newborn session was such an amazing continuation of her story.
The transition from pregnancy to life with a newborn happens so fast. Suddenly, the anticipation becomes reality, and the days are filled with tiny fingers, sleepy expressions, quiet cuddles, and a love that seems to change everything.
For this session, we kept things relaxed and personal, allowing the story to unfold naturally in the place where so much of this new chapter would happen: home.
I love in-home newborn photography because it allows families to remain in their own environment, without the pressure of getting everyone ready and heading somewhere else. There is room for pauses, for feeding and cuddling, for older siblings to be themselves, and for the beautiful unpredictability that comes with a new baby.
These photographs are about more than how small a newborn once was. They preserve the feeling of those early days, when everything is new and time seems to move both incredibly slowly and far too quickly.
Finding Connection Through Style and Motherhood
One of my favorite parts of working with Kim was discovering how much I connected through her appreciation for style and the details that make a story feel personal.
I have always believed that family photography can be beautiful without feeling overly styled or staged. The way a family dresses, the objects they surround themselves with, the light in their home, and the way they interact all contribute to the visual story.
Kim's eye for style and her creative perspective made photographing her especially inspiring. Through her work at @styledbykim, she shares a way of seeing that celebrates aesthetics and thoughtful choices. Getting to know her beyond that creative side, and documenting such an intimate season of her life, was a reminder that the most meaningful photographs bring together beauty and real connection.
It is never just about creating an image that looks beautiful. It is about making something that feels true to the people in it.
Why I Love Documenting Families at Home
As a family photographer serving Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, I feel incredibly lucky to be invited into people's homes to document these personal chapters.
There is no single way a family should look or a newborn session should unfold. Every home is different. Every baby has their own rhythm. Every family has its own way of loving, connecting, and finding its feet during those first weeks together.
My approach to family photography is relaxed and story-driven. I want you to remember how your baby fit into your arms, what your home felt like during those early days, and the little things you might not realize you will miss until they have changed.
These are the details that make your photographs yours.
Kim's maternity and newborn sessions were a beautiful reminder of why I love what I do: the people I meet, the connections we make, and the privilege of preserving moments that might otherwise pass by unnoticed.
Thank you, Kim, for inviting me into your home and allowing me to document such a meaningful chapter of your family's story. It was a joy to connect with you through our shared love of style and creativity, and an even greater joy to capture this season of motherhood for you.
