How to Get Ready for Your In-Home Session (Without Stressing About It)
Hey there! I’m Rita — a lifestyle photographer working with amazing families all around the DMV and Northern Virginia. After photographing so many beautiful, messy, and joy-filled moments at homes, I’ve learned that a little planning goes a long way… but so does letting go of the pressure to make things perfect.
My in-home sessions are all about capturing your family just as you are — in your space, in your rhythm, and in your most natural state of connection. So if you're wondering how to prep, here are some real-life, stress-free tips to help you feel ready (and excited!) for our time together.
1. Your Home Does Not Need to Be Perfect
Seriously. Don’t worry if your couch has seen better days or the walls aren’t Pinterest-level styled. I’m not here for the decor — I’m here for the connection. What makes your home photo-worthy is the love and life that fills it. So go ahead, leave the Legos in the corner and the coffee mug on the table — your story lives in those little details.
2. You Don’t Need to Rearrange Everything
No need to turn your house upside down. When I arrive, I’ll take a quick walk-through and find the spots with the best natural light. That might not be where you were planning to take photos — and that’s totally okay! We’ll work with what works best, and I promise, it’ll look amazing.
3. Chat With Your Family the Day Before
Sometimes kids (and parents!) get nervous about having a camera around. So the night before, have a little family chat. Let the kids know we’ll be hanging out, playing, and capturing fun memories — nothing stiff or staged. And please, don’t stress if the morning doesn’t go perfectly. Tantrums happen. Spills happen. The beauty of an in-home session is that there’s time — time to settle in, regroup, and just be together.
4. Don’t Forget the Backyard
If you’ve got a backyard — no matter how big, small, or messy — it’s perfect! That’s usually where the magic happens: kids running wild, parents chasing them, grass-stained knees and giggles all around. It’s real, and it’s 100% worth capturing.
5. Yes, Pets Are Totally Welcome
As a dog lover myself, I’m all about including your pet family members in our session. They can hang out with us the whole time, or just pop in for a bit — whatever works for you. And if they bark, jump, or photobomb us? Even better. That’s real life!
6. Let Your Kids Be Themselves
Some kids warm up fast and want to show me everything — their room, their favorite toys, their secret hideouts. Others are more reserved at first. Both are perfectly okay.
I usually spend a little time chatting with them as I unpack my gear — asking names, getting to know them, just making it feel normal. The best thing you can do? Let them take the lead. No pressure. No "say cheese." Just them, being them.
Final Thought
These sessions are about connection, not perfection. Your home, your people, your energy — that’s what matters. So take a deep breath, grab that coffee, and trust the process. I’ve got you.
Can't wait to spend time with your family and create something meaningful together.
