If you are an expat, here is a little wisdom...
I never imagined my life would bring me to where I am today. Some mornings when I wake up, or when I walk my kids to the bus stop, I have to remind myself that Vienna, VA is home now (hopefully for many years) and that I get to work here, being a Washington DC Photographer, which I absolutely love.
When Jaime and I got married, we wanted an adventure. So, when he asked me to move to LA for a couple of years, I said YES! Now, sixteen years later, we’re in Washington DC, and returning to Mexico seems unlikely. It’s been a rollercoaster ride with plenty of ups and downs. Being an expat is an emotional rollercoaster, and learning to navigate it is key.
Today, I want to share some truths about being an expat mom. If you’re moving by yourself or with your family, please know that you’re brave, and I hope these truths help make your journey a little easier.
It is ok to feel overwhelmed
Even when it is exciting, being an expat can be overwhelming, especially when you're adjusting to a new culture and language. It’s easy to feel lost, with new systems to figure out and kids to manage. You might feel anxious and cry at times, and it is OK. Something that has helped me is finding joy in the small things, being present and understanding that it takes time to adjust. Be kind to yourself.
You will learn to ask for help
Living abroad means stepping out of your comfort zone, and you'll quickly learn the importance of asking for help. Whether it's a neighbor, another expat, or a local, getting support isn't a sign of weakness. It’s all about building a network and finding people who can make the transition easier. You’ll be surprised how much lighter things feel when you lean on others.
witnessing your kids become resilient
If you have kids, watching them adjust to a new country is amazing. They’ll handle challenges like making friends in a new language or adapting to a different school system. You’ll see them become more confident, flexible, and resilient, teaching you how to be adaptable too.
You will be surprised at all the things you can accomplish
Living in a new place pushes you to get creative, whether it's juggling work, learning a new language, or navigating daily life. Over time, you’ll realize how much stronger and more capable you’ve become in ways you never expected.
You will lose the fear of putting yourself out there
Being an expat means you're constantly trying new things, whether it’s exploring a new city, adapting to local customs, or taking on a new job. The fear of stepping out of your comfort zone fades as you get used to challenges. You’ll start embracing new experiences and seeing them as opportunities to grow.
If this post resonated with you, I hope you know that you're not alone on this journey. Living abroad is an incredible experience and a chance to grow, explore new cultures, and create unforgettable memories. While it can be challenging at times, the rewards of embracing a new life in a foreign country are truly life-changing.
