A Family Session in Great Falls, Virginia: Finding meaning in the Unexpected


Some stories are special, and Christy’s story is one of those.


I first met Christy through her business, Tails of Connection, where I had the opportunity to meet her family and her amazing dogs. So when she later reached out to me about a family photography session to say goodbye to their home, I knew this session would be different.


This home meant everything to her family. But because of a serious mold situation, they were forced to leave almost from one minute to the next. Can you imagine the heartbreak of having to suddenly leave the place where so many of your memories were made?


With only the essentials packed, Christy and her family began a months-long journey of figuring out what would come next. Through it all, she has been fiercely working to rebuild her life and create stability for her family while remaining hopeful, happy, and positive.


That is why this Great Falls family photography session was so important to me. I wanted to create something that would last—a collection of photographs that could preserve this chapter of their story and become a tangible reminder of the love, connection, and beauty that still surrounded them during such an uncertain time.


A Family Photography Session in Great Falls


We knew we couldn't go inside the house because of the mold, but we didn't need to.


On a beautiful sunny day, we spent time outside capturing the little things that made their family feel like themselves. Their routines. Their connection. Their dogs. Their land. Their joy.


There was dancing and exploring, gardening and hugging trees. There were a few tears, too, because this was an emotional goodbye.

And, through all of it, there was love.


Those are the moments I love most about lifestyle family photography. We don't have to manufacture beautiful moments. We simply make space for families to be together, and the meaningful moments naturally unfold.


We ended our Great Falls, Virginia family session with a short hike toward the Potomac River, one of their favorite things to do together.

Exploring the woods around their home had become part of their family rituals. Watching them walk those familiar paths together, I was struck by how naturally the landscape had become part of their family story.


The woods, the trails, the dogs, the river—it was all part of what made this family who they are.


As a Washington DC family photographer, I am always looking for those places and little rituals that make a family session personal. Sometimes that means documenting a family's favorite neighborhood. Sometimes it means spending an afternoon at home. And sometimes, like this session, it means walking through the woods and letting a family simply be together.


More Than Family Photos


This session allowed me to get to know Christy and her family on a deeper level. I learned more about their story, their home, their routines, and how the challenges they were facing had changed them.


It reminded me that family photography is about so much more than creating beautiful images.


It is about documenting a chapter of your life.


It is about remembering what home felt like.


It is about the people—and sometimes the animals—you love most.


And it is about creating photographs that can hold a memory long after circumstances have changed.


I hope these photographs become part of something beautiful for Christy and her family. I hope they become a memory and a treasure—a reminder of this home, this season, and the love that carried them through it.


I am certain great things are ahead for this beautiful family. And I feel incredibly grateful that I was able to document a small piece of their story.
